Carrie D. Patnode, PhD, MPH

Carrie Patnode, PhD, MPH, is a behavioral epidemiologist whose research focuses on evidence synthesis and guideline development, primarily around complex behavioral interventions in clinical preventive services. She leads systematic reviews for the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) in the areas of counseling for breastfeeding, diet and physical activity counseling, tobacco use prevention and treatment, screening and treatment of cognitive impairment among older adults, treatment of adult obesity, and screening for drug use. She also works on methodologic research related to dissemination and implementation of evidence-based guidelines, assessing the risk of bias in individual studies in systematic reviews, rapid review procedures, using existing systematic reviews in evidence synthesis, and engaging stakeholders.

Dr. Patnode is an associate director with Cochrane US West,  an associate editor for the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality (AHRQ) Effective Health Care Program, and an invited expert reviewer for the Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care. She has conducted evidence reviews for AHRQ, the USPSTF, the Community Preventive Services Task Force, the World Health Organization, and the Kaiser Permanente Care Management Institute.

Dr. Patnode joined the Center for Health Research in December 2009. Previously, she worked in the Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There, she helped develop and evaluate national health communication and social marketing efforts.

Dr. Patnode received her MPH in health education and behavioral sciences from Emory University and her PhD in epidemiology from the University of Minnesota.
