Center for Health Research and OHSU Receive Major Grant to Pursue Learning Health System Science

The nearly $4 million award, from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute, will fund a new Center of Excellence for collaborative health care research.
The Agency for Healthcare Research and the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute have awarded OHSU and the Kaiser Permanente Northwest Center for Health Research (CHR) nearly $4 million to develop a Center of Excellence for collaborative health care research.
Based on the concept of learning health system science, the NW Center of Excellence & K12 in Patient Centered Learning Health Systems Science will develop the next generation of researchers and scientists from 13 Oregon-based health and research systems.

“Our LHS Center of Excellence approach is groundbreaking in that it will help launch new research careers that align science, informatics and culture, positively transforming health and health care in Oregon and beyond,” said Lucy A. Savitz, PhD, vice president of research for Kaiser Permanente Northwest and director of CHR.
With the help of Academy Health, a health services resource center, the center’s training programs will extend to leaders and learners across the United States.
“Through this collaborative approach, we will create a strong foundation that will help to achieve the triple aim of better care and improved patient care experience at lower costs,” said Jeanne-Marie Guise, MD, MPH, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology, emergency medicine, medical informatics and clinical epidemiology, and public health and preventive medicine in the OHSU School of Medicine. “The future of health care delivery looks bright.”
Program curricula will prepare research scholars to design, implement, and disseminate evidence-based, real-world research projects that will improve health, health decision-making, and health care systems in the years to come. It will also promote cross-institutional interactions and cooperative sharing of research findings. Enrollment will begin later this fall.
Center participants include OHSU, CHR, OHSU health system partners, Oregon Community Health Information Network, Portland VA Medical Center, Oregon Rural Practice Research Network, Oregon Health Authority and Central City Concern.
