Prevention of Adverse Vaccinations Effects (PAVE)

Downloadable Program Materials

Overview

The goal of this study was to assess and implement simple strategies to reduce injection site pain and syncope among preteens and teens aged 11–17 years following vaccination.

About the Study

We began by conducting focus groups and interviews to identify patient, parent, and provider preference for and acceptance of interventions that are currently recommended, but not widely implemented, to reduce pain and prevent syncope following vaccination.

We then conducted a pilot study to assess the feasibility and acceptability of implementing a pain- and syncope-reducing intervention (vaccination comfort menu) within two Kaiser Permanente Northwest (KPNW) pediatric clinics. To assess the potential impact of the intervention, we surveyed patients to determine whether it improved their experience. We also conducted implementation interviews with providers to examine the impact of the intervention on clinical workflow and the feasibility of long-term, widespread implementation of this intervention.

Findings & Dissemination

We are currently analyzing parent survey data and preparing manuscripts for publication. Publications will be added to this website as they become available.

The PAVE study was funded by the National Vaccine Program Office (NVPO; contract # VSRNV000002).
