Overview

The goal of this study was to increase adolescent vaccination rates by encouraging dental providers to recommend vaccinations to their patients or their parents.

About the Study

We randomized sixteen dental clinics within Kaiser Permanente Northwest (KPNW) either to an intervention group or to a control group (usual care). The intervention components included a provider education session, scripts for recommending vaccines, and a brochure for patients.

We surveyed dental provider knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs about vaccination and preventive medical care at baseline and the end of the intervention period. We conducted implementation interviews with providers throughout the intervention period to assess feasibility and acceptance of the intervention. We also surveyed parents about their perceptions of dental team communication and vaccine recommendations. Finally, we compared changes in adolescent vaccination rates from baseline to the end of the study period at intervention and control dental clinics.
