Biography:
A Scholastic Magazine scholarship brought Johanson to Portland from Seattle in
1946 to attend the Museum Art School. It was his first acquaintance with fine
art, and it introduced him to printmaking. He taught at the Museum Art School
and served as head of the printmaking department until his retirement. Johanson
received the Governor's Award for the Arts in 1992. Johanson divided his time
between painting and printmaking; his subject matter often included figures in
interior spaces with the cityscape in the distance.
